O'Neil was a student in high-school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. The judges loved her voice and she made it to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil received excellent praise from the judges, however she was a victim of significant loss during the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted to the bottom three or the bottom two spots, respectively. Judges were amazed by her performance and recommended viewers to select singers who were well-known, such as Melissa. With consistently excellent performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished within the top three. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7,2005, where O'Neil was able to advance to the top two spots in the contest. Werner said that in the morning, the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie as she became the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was contacted by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol immediately.
